Uhhhhh.....

Pope considers return to Latin mass

Wouldn't this be negating everything in Vatican II about the whole "preaching the gospel to everyone" bit?

I mean, if no one understands Latin anymore, what good would it do to have the mass in that language? I mean the format of it is fine, with the priest facing the altar away from the people; just use the vernacular.

Or don't mess with it at all. I'm guessing the past 40-ish years weren't THAT bad for you, B.

it's fun singing a few songs in Latin but not the whole Mass...I would get bored and maybe throw something at chris if he happened to be there....yep

Well, just a little imput from a friend of Mike who just stumbled into your blog:

The Pope isn't changing anything that VII says, or saying the Latin Mass is better or that people have to celebrate it now against their will even if they don't understand it. He's just saying that if people like the Latin Mass, they should be able to have one.

As for the actual language stuff, during most of the mass, you can follow along in the missal, which has Latin on one side and English on the other. And the Gospel and Homily have always been said in English.

So...there's something, at least. It's really not a big scary reversion to pre-Vatican II. Just trying to make people who like the Latin Mass happy.

I agree with Cow. VII never said to get rid of Latin. Now we can enjoy two different forms of the Mass as we want to.

I'm hoping that attending the extraordinary form will heighten my appreciation for the one I'm used to.

See you tonight. Again.
