Public Service Clarification

After seeing the new Star Trek (twice!), I feel I am obligated to define a few terms that have been tossed around in the media and other avenues of disclosure these past few days.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GEEK AND A NERD.

It's simple, really.

If you like Star Trek (collectibles, uniform, DVDs, etc.) you're a Trekkie.
If you like Star Wars (collectibles, uniform, props, DVDs, etc.) you're a Star Wars guy.

If you like Star Trek, Star Wars, and LOTR, you're awesome.
If you like D&D, you're a NERD.
If you like D&D, and you have a girlfriend who also likes D&D, God help you. But... you sure are luckier than most of the aforementioned people.

Let's face it: we're all nerds or geeks about something. Frankly, I'm tired of the debate between what's better and what's not. The fact of the matter is, each series (or game) has its underlying moral implications that, really, are the basis of why we're fans of it in the first place. Of course Trek has the awesome ships and the cool militaristic characters, and Wars has the great characters and continuity and familial drama, but what do they both have? Moral fiber. As James Doohan said of the original series' popularity, "everybody wants to hear a good story". That, my friends, is what all Sci-Fi should be about. Take the best part of humanity, project it into whichever version of Earth's future you want, and offer enough inspiration through characters, plots, and good writing (and effects!) to give hope to the world. Show us that this (economic, social, moral) shithole we're in now isn't permanent.

And for God's sake, if you're going to do a reboot of a series, do it like JJ Abrams did. Copy the idea of Back to the Future 2? Heck yes. A great way to make other sci-fi ideas work for you. Props.

Amen, brother. You nailed it. It's why I love these stories.

Loved the new Trek. This was Star Trek for Star Wars fans. Used to watch Trek with my dad back in the day and this was the first Trek movie that felt like the old show to me.

Keep on blogging!
