College Quad = Silly Anecdotes

Seriously. Think about it.

"The path to wisdom"... "Academic Corridor"... etc etc.

I was thinking. I'm gonna try and be as cheesy as possible with this post (let you in on a secret: I think I'm about to succeed).

Hokay, point one:

1) There are a bunch of paths in the quad. All around campus there's streamlined, concrete, tried-and-tested paths to get to different buildilngs, classes, places. You get the idea. Nothing's wrong with taking those paths.. Sometimes they take a while because there's either a lot of people on there and it's all cluttered, you might be tired so you walk slow, whatever the reason might be.
2) There's also a lot of grass outside the paths. Nobody really walks on the grass. It's entirely allowed and accepted, but no one does it. The first time I did it I felt strange. Then I saw others do it and it allayed my fears (stupid, immature high school do-I-fit-in fears).
3) We remember the old adage, "The shortest distance between two points is a straight line." To get to your destination (class, convo, w/e) go in as straight a line as possible. Whether it be a path, grass, over buildlings, whatever. Do it.

After reading all that, hopefully you, the reader, kept up with all the silly cliche things you always hear when "shooting for the moon" (oops there's another one). Let's name them!
  • Something sticks out in 1 and 2 that reminds me of Robert Frost's "The Road Less Traveled" etc.
  • Number 3 is just pathetic. But like I said, I succeeded in being corny, did I not.
So, as I was walking across the grass today after class back to my dorm, I was thinking... I almost never walk in the grass when it's dark out. I keep to the path because it's the only thing I can see. I also remember it and know when it turns, stuff like that. Could it be that walking in the grass would mean I'm straying from the tried-and-true method of walking to my destination? If the grass represents the unknown in the dark (and the light), would walking in the grass make me brave? Since I was "afraid" when I first did it would that logically follow that there is an inbred fear of the unknown, yet obviously harmless in the human psyche?

How awesome is that. Anyway...

I was thinking... would it show bravery or stupidity in taking the grass? There's nothing wrong with it, it's acceptable and it gets you there faster. SO WHY DOES NO ONE USE IT??

It's unknown. I know I've run into a logical paradox but the unknown is nothing. We have nothing to fear. Nothing does not exist. Therefore, the fear of the unknown does not exist.

Then what exists? Something.

It's cold out today. Ohio weather for ya.

I walk in the grass when I'm in a bad mood or I'm just frustrated with narrow-minded people. I've also noticed that people tend to all go through the same door into a building just because it is open or someone is holding it open. Sometimes I feel strange going in a different door but then people begin to follow me. I guess I'm just one of those trend setters. I'm so cool!

lol i agree!

but isnt it weird how it seems like NO ONE ELSE does it until someone does it...

it's like no one but yourself is an original thinker. not to sound conceited but thats what it feels like sometimes, yeah?

lol, I think people are all original thinkers but you need to catch them on the right day or right time. I really shouldn't just get frustrated like that and be more forgiving I guess.

I remember talking in class about how, even if you feel like you should be taking notes, you usually won't start unless you see at least one other person doing it.

I've always wondered about only walking on established paths, especially when they clearly take longer. At MUC, all the paths to class (from where I lived the last two years) went around the Quad and everybody stayed on them.

I think it's just easier for all of us to follow the crowd, even in little things like these. We have a fear of being pointed out or being somehow different.
